COLOR INDEX (CI)

The Color Index (CI) identifies dyes by numbers that designate specific color pigments, such as CI 77007 for ultramarine blue. Dyes in cosmetic products are, according to the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009, ingredients that primarily serve to give color to cosmetic products or body parts. Annex IV of the regulation lists approved dyes that are subject to strict safety tests before they can be used. Furthermore, the regulation sets specific maximum concentrations and permitted areas of use for certain dyes to ensure the safety of application in cosmetic products. (1,2)
