GLYCERIN/GLYCEROL

Glycerin is a trivalent alcohol and thus plays a crucial role in the hydration of the stratum corneum: When the barrier function is impaired, changes in the function of aquaporin 3, an epidermal water/glycerin transporter, can occur, leading to reduced hydration and loss of elasticity in the skin. This can be corrected through the topical application of glycerin. (1)
